About Kaytlyn
Kaytlyn Johnson is a proud Palawa singer-songwriter from North-West Tasmania. At 22 years old, she will complete her final year studying a Diploma of Music through the Victorian College of Arts.
Kaytlyn has been passionate about songwriting since Primary School and has performed her original music alongside reputable artists, such as opening for Thelma Plum and composing and performing with GRAMMY® award winning artist, Lucky Oceans.
Kaytlyn has received grants from Creative Australia and has been selected as a mentee in multiple Australian Music Development programs, including APRA AMCOS’ Women In Music Mentorship program.
In 2021, She was selected for a songwriting mentorship with Eurovision finalist Kate Miller-Heidke. As a young Palawa woman, Kaytlyn has been inspired to write about her identity, her experiences and her dreams.
In 2022, she was sponsored by the Labor Party to record her identity anthem, ‘My Hands’, which expresses the challenges of defending her Aboriginality whilst growing up in a white and conservative community.
In the same year, she was named the 2022 TAS Young Australian of The Year and continues to use her platform to advocate for Indigenous communities, rural youth leadership opportunities and action toward Climate Change. Kaytlyn hopes to pursue a career in pop music, whilst using her growing platform to spread positive and hopeful messaging.
In 2023, Kaytlyn has elevated her presence as an emerging artist in many Industry programs, such as the APRA AMCOS Women In Music Mentorship Program, Creative Australia's Space To Create II Residency, and will finish the year touring as part of Creative Australia's Contemporary Music Touring Program. This tour across her home state will celebrate her debut release, Sunburn, which will be on all streaming platforms on November 29th, 2023.
The angsty pop-punk anthem journeys through the intricacies of receiving lacklustre effort within a long-distance relationship, through stories of missed phone calls and reminiscing memories.
Kaytlyn’s fusion of indie, pop and rock has produced a versatile catalogue of original music, including high-energy pop-rock anthems such as Sunburn, through to lyrically intricate dreamy Sunday tunes. Kaytlyn cant wait to share her original music with audiences as she tours Tasmania in December!
